Newton Trails builds hard-surfaced trails that are at least eight feet wide, which allows cyclists and pedestrians to pass each other safely. Some benefits of multi-use trails include:
____________________
HEALTH
In 2001, the Newton County Health Department conducted a community health assessment and determined that obesity, poor nutrition, and a lack of exercise are the primary contributors to the three leading causes of death in Newton County: cardiovascular disease, cancer, and diabetes. Current behaviors and attitudes towards nutrition and exercise are more likely to change if there are more opportunities for and a greater emphasis on active living.
TRANSPORTATION CHOICES
While the historic core of Covington has a fairly decent network of sidewalks, newer developments often lack connectivity and proximity to schools, commercial districts and recreational facilities, a situation that promotes more driving. Multi-use trails offer a safe alternative.
INCREASED PROPERTY VALUES
The PATH Foundation in Atlanta has shown that the value of properties adjacent and in proximity to multi-use trails increases faster than those without such an amenity. Developers along the Silver Comet Trail in Atlanta now cite the trail in advertisements for residential subdivisions.
ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT
Multi-use trails create living spaces that are more visually and functionally appealing. They raise property values, attract health and environment-conscious newcomers, and create an market for small, local businesses among a population that values small town life, locally-owned businesses, healthy living and accessibility of goods and services.
PROTECTED GREENSPACE
Multi-use trails are a good reason to maintain forested buffers between residential areas. Such buffers, linked together by the trail, effectively become linear parks. The protected greenspace adds beauty and value to the area.
WILDLIFE PRESERVATION
As the Newton County continues to develop rapidly, wildlife habitat is disappearing. Development can create physical barriers to wildlife food and water sources. Animals either disappear altogether or adapt to urban areas and become a nuisance. Corridors created for trails allow wildlife to pass and increase the chance for our children to view wildlife.
